Woman arrested after shooting her adult son to death in Port Alberni

A woman is in custody after her adult son was shot and killed in Port Alberni on Sunday.

Port Alberni RCMP say the shooting happened at around 6 p.m. at a residence in the 31000-block of 18th Avenue.

“The responding officers quickly contained the site, identified the parties involved and a suspect was taken into custody without incident,” Port Alberni RCMP Sgt. Peter Dionne state in a news release.

On Monday, Samantha Jesselynn Dittmer, born in 1960, was charged with careless use of a firearm.

Port Alberni RCMP, citing privacy laws, haven’t released the victim’s name, but family friends have confirmed the man killed was Jesse McPhee, Dittmer’s adult son.

In May, Dittmer filed a civil lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court against McPhee and his estranged wife.

The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating the death along with the RCMP.

Dittmer is scheduled to appear in a Nanaimo courtroom on Thursday.
