Man convicted in death of senior outside Costco store in Vancouver

A man who was charged after a senior citizen died following an altercation outside a Costco store in Vancouver has been convicted of manslaughter.

In June 2018, Vancouver police announced that Thomas Stephen Toth, 58, had been charged with manslaughter in the Dec. 20, 2017, death of Orlando Ocampo, 86, of Vancouver.

At the time of the incident outside the store on Expo Boulevard, police said that it appeared that the victim had struck his head on the ground after allegedly being pushed.

The suspect fled on foot while others performed first aid on the victim until he was taken to hospital by ambulance. Ocampo, a Vancouver resident, died of his injuries on Jan. 11, 2018.

Toth, a resident of Vancouver who was released from custody after being charged, was convicted of the offence on Dec. 1 last year following a two-week jury trial in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for March 5.
