Man arrested after reaching for stranger’s baby in New Westminster

A 46-year-old man has been charged with assault and mischief after a pair of fights in New Westminster that started when a man reached into a stranger’s baby stroller.

Police said it happened at the intersection of Sixth Street and Carnarvon at about 7:45 p.m. on Friday.

“The caller described a series of events including a man reaching for a baby in a stroller, a fight with the guardian of the child, and a fight with a driver after blocking traffic and punching a car,” New West police spokesman Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in a statement.

The driver of the vehicle got out and confronted the man and a fight broke out.

Then, when police arrived, they allege the man spat on the officer trying to arrest him.

Jamie Maclean has been charged with assaulting a police officer and one count of mischief.

Kumar said anyone who saw the events and found them “distressing” can reach out to New Westminster police for support.
