Taco night takeout: Five Metro Vancouver eateries to satisfy your craving
Mexican food is at once vibrant and comforting, easygoing and yet rich with complex flavours. Whether it’s traditional regional fare, or redefined by way of California, Texas or Tofino, there’s something fundamentally satisfying about any food that comes wrapped in a tortilla. It’s even better when you can enjoy it while catching up on episodes of Perry Mason or The Watchmen.
There has, in recent years, been a boomlet in Mexican eateries across the Lower Mainland, so check your neighbourhood fave to see if it’s offering takeout. Or order pickup or delivery from these five great options. Buen provecho, all.
Tacofino’s Baja-by-way-of-the-West-Coast fare is available at several locations in Vancouver and Victoria, and now through its website. Order pickup or delivery from the location nearest you, and you can find yourself enjoying the famous fish or carnitas tacos, bake-it-yourself nachos, and the irresistible chili-and-dark-chocolate-flavoured diablo cookie before you know it. Wine, beer and cocktail kits are also available, and if ever a time called for a pitcher of Margaritas, this is it. Tacofino also plans to unveil several new taco varieties in honour of National Taco Day on Oct. 4, so plan accordingly.
Las Margaritas has been serving up its hearty style of Mexi-Cali cuisine (and the city’s best tequila selection) since 1994, when it opened its doors in Kits. Now you can order the much-loved overstuffed chicken burritos, cheesy chimichangas, crispy taquitos and, for the hungry and /or undecided, the fiesta platter for pickup or delivery. There are also taco kits, Margarita kits, six-packs of beer as well as sauces, frozen meals and more to enjoy en su casa.
3. El Santo
At New Westminster’s El Santo, executive chef Sam Fabbro celebrates the flavours of Mexico with the ingredients of the Pacific Northwest, so expect unique twists on classic favourites. The takeout menu is designed for easy travel, and includes tacos lavished with fried cauliflower and mango salsa, or beer-battered B.C. ling cod, or chipotle-chili-marinated chicken. There’s also fancier fare like confit duck with mole sauce or halibut in adobo, as well as sweet churros with dulce de leche, and Margarita and Paloma kits.
4. La Taqueria
Instead of ordering a ready-made taco feast, there’s a lot to be said for ordering a kit and assembling it yourself. You can prepare dinner at your leisure, for one thing; for another, crispy things stay crisp, and gooey ones remain melty rather than rubbery. La Taqueria’s Cyber Taco Shop offers meat or veggie meal kits for pickup and delivery in Vancouver and North Van (and soon to come, Brentwood Mall in Burnaby). You’ll get loads of freshly made corn tortillas, fillings like chicken mole, pork al pastor or several vegetarian options, as well as rice, salsas and, at the Vancouver location, beer and tequila as well.
Chancho is most famous for its tortillas, made the authentic way with nixtamalized corn, just the way it’s been done for centuries. It’s this attention to detail that earned the Yaletown tortilleria the title of Best Latin at the recent Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards. And now you can enjoy it at home. You can order just the tortillas, or the fillings, toppings and sides as well; there’s even a backyard taco kit that will feed everyone in your bubble. Don’t skip the made-to-order guacamole. And if you’re picking dinner up in person, you can also grab some beer and/or natural wine to go as well.
