RCMP destroys $8 million worth of cannabis near Merritt

B.C. RCMP say they have destroyed $8 million worth of illegal cannabis at a rural property near Merritt.

Merritt RCMP say the plants were being cultivated at a large rural cannabis grow operation off Highway 8.

On Oct. 30, police, assisted by a local contractor, executed a search warrant and destroyed around 100,000 cannabis plants that were growing on the property.

The RCMP estimated the plants would have a value of $8 million once dried and processed.

Police say the property was not a licensed commercial operation as it did not have approval from Health Canada to grow cannabis or hemp.

Under the Cannabis Act, an adult can grow just four plants for their personal use.

The RCMP are still investigating. No charges have been filed.
